One of the key books on early professional football. As Catton states in his introduction: "the object of this little book is to tell in simple language, and with such detail as the official records obtainable and limited space will allow, the history of the most powerful clubs in the League to-day". Between the season of 1888-89 and 1896-97 21 clubs appeared in the First Division of the Football League. This work covers only the 16 clubs in the top flight for the 1896-97 season, with each chapter dedicated to one club offering a history of its formation and a line drawing of its leading personality.

Paperback. 12mo. 160pp. including advertisement leaves. Photographic frontispiece (Aston Villa team in 1895-96), line engravings in the text. The covers are heavily rubbed with some loss to edges and a closed tear to back cover. Some short closed tears to edges of first few pages, but no text lost. The occasional ink note to margins. The original staples are rusted and the binding is coming loose. Ink name to front cover. Despite all these issues the book is complete and could easily be rebound. A very rare and important book.
